During heavy storms, like tropical storm Joan in 1988 and Lenny in 1999 or the hurricane Ivan in 2004 the different coral formations that grow from 6 feet down to a depth of approximately 20 feet is torn lose from its foothold and thrown on the shore of almost all the Caribbean islands. The movement of the waves together with the bleaching effect of the sun make the now dead coral rounded and clean.

During the ages the island peoples made practical use of those, some times massive coral formations, as building material but also domestic use as pestle to grind seeds and nuts.
