Even though it is illegal to collect black coral here, an exception was made for Bert Knubben. Collectors are very keen seek out this type of coral, not only for the quality of its craftsmanship, but also because it's becoming increasingly rare and may one day not be for sale at all.

Bert Knubben, the master craftsman of the rare black coral can usually be found sitting in his small wooden shop, fashioning a tiny twiglike piece into one of kind pair of ear-rings. His shop overlooks the beach within the complex of rooms which form the Breezes Curacao Resort, just a few miles down the coast from Willemstad, Curacao's main port.
